Junge Blanks Warriors in Opening-Day Win
The Charleston Southern softball team picked up their first win of the season on Thursday night, holding the Merrimack Warriors scoreless in a 3-0 affair. This was the first of two between these teams.
Annah Junge pitched a complete game, going 7.0 innings and allowing three hits, striking out eight and did not walk a batter, throwing 96 pitches. She improved to 1-0 on the season.
The Bucs (1-0) got things started in the bottom of the third when Gracie Prince got on base with a one-out walk. Two batters later, Harper Schoeneweis picked up her first RBI of the season with a double to right field to make it 1-0.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Weslin Jones led off the inning with a walk and got to second with a stolen base. Then, Ashley Meckley made it 2-0 with a base hit into left field. Jones originally held up at third base, but an errant throw by the left fielder allowed for her to score.
The Bucs got some more insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning as Schoeneweis led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. After Lexi Markle moved her to third on a ground ball to second base, Madelyne Lee brought her home on a sacrifice fly.
