MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (February 16, 2023) – The Town of Mount Pleasant Culture, Arts & Pride (CAP) Commission invites artists to submit proposals for its Art on the Half Shell program.
Art on the Half Shell features four-foot fiberglass oyster sculptures painted by local artists that will be displayed in public spaces throughout Mount Pleasant in an ongoing effort to foster pride through the arts while also promoting local artists and our town’s unique creative community.
Eligible applicants must reside in the Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties and artwork should be inspired by Mount Pleasant culture and community. The commission strives to select unique subject matter and varied artistic styles; any interested artist may request a document with pictures of all existing designs by contacting cap@tompsc.com.
Selected artists will receive a blank oyster sculpture to paint their winning design and will be awarded a $750 honorarium upon return of their painted oyster.
To submit a proposal, artists must email photos of their design concept, a few recent completed art pieces, a biography, and the application for review by the CAP commissioners. The application and guidelines are available on the CAP Commission page at tompsc.com. The deadline to apply for this year’s program is Feb. 27, 2023.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for Mount Pleasant businesses interested in displaying an Art on the Half Shell sculpture in an outdoor public-facing area of their business. Information is available on the same page as the artist application, or business representatives may contact the Community Affairs & Marketing Division of the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department at cap@tompsc.com.
