Congresswoman Nancy Mace is set to make history once again as she becomes the first female graduate to deliver the commencement address at the 2024 Corps of Cadets graduation ceremony at The Citadel. Mace, who was the first female cadet to graduate from The Citadel 25 years ago, will address the graduating class on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 9 a.m. in McAlister Field House. The ceremony will be livestreamed for all to watch.
In 1999, Mace made headlines by becoming the first female cadet to graduate from The Citadel with a degree in Business Administration, achieving magna cum laude. Her achievement paved the way for future generations of women at the military college, with women now making up approximately 13% of the Corps of Cadets.
Mace's upcoming commencement address is a significant moment for The Citadel as it celebrates 25 years of female cadet graduates. Her speech is expected to be a highlight of the festivities, symbolizing the progress and achievements made by women at the institution.
Hailing from the Lowcountry, Mace comes from a family with strong ties to the military. Her father, Brig. Gen. James E. Mace, Citadel class of 1963, is the most decorated living graduate of The Citadel.
The commencement ceremony will be followed by The Citadel Graduate College commencement ceremony at 3:30 p.m., also livestreamed from McAlister Field House. For further details on both ceremonies and events honoring this historic achievement, please visit the official website of The Citadel.
