Congresswoman Nancy Mace is set to make history once again by becoming the inaugural female graduate commencement speaker for the 2024 Corps of Cadets commencement ceremony at The Citadel. Mace, who was the first female cadet to graduate from The Citadel 25 years ago, will deliver a commencement address on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 9 a.m. in McAlister Field House.
In a statement, Mace expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, saying, "I am honored to be chosen as the commencement speaker for this year's ceremony at The Citadel. It is truly a privilege to address the graduating class and be a part of this historic moment."
Mace's achievement in 1999 paved the way for other women to follow in her footsteps at The Citadel. Today, approximately 13% of the Corps of Cadets are women, a testament to the progress inspired by Mace's groundbreaking journey.
The upcoming commencement ceremony will not only celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating cadets but also mark 25 years since the first female cadet graduated from The Citadel. The event is expected to be a significant milestone for the college, with various festivities planned to honor this achievement.
Born in the Lowcountry, Mace comes from a family with a strong military background. Her father, Brig. Gen. James E. Mace, a Citadel graduate himself, is the most decorated living graduate of The Citadel.
The commencement ceremony, along with The Citadel Graduate College commencement ceremony later in the day, will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
