On Friday, May 24, 2024, Captain Andrew Glover of the North Charleston Police Department completed the course requirements for graduation from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Command College, a formalized leadership program in the nation. This program is designed to inspire law enforcement professionals to share best practices in serving the public, reducing crime, and building exemplary police departments.

Captain Glover’s journey began in December 2023 with a physical fitness assessment to test the stamina of candidates. This was a small first step in a demanding two hundred and forty-hour course spread over six months. In addition to basic police work, command-level topics covered included fostering a professional environment at every level of a police department, leadership challenges in modern policing, Public Information Officer and Community Outreach development, and providing peer support for both professional and personal situations.

The course encouraged introspection through a “360 review,” which allows colleagues, subordinates, and leaders to provide feedback about an officer’s performance. Candidates were also tested with team-building exercises and personal growth evolutions, including “ropes courses” involving physical tasks on the ground or slightly above it as well as activities requiring rappels from heights between fifty and ninety-eight feet. The final exercise was a 24-hour climb of Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC.
