Congresswoman Nancy Mace has introduced the "Snowmobiles Aren’t Weapons Act" (SAW Act) to prevent the misuse of motor vehicles in harming wildlife on federal lands.
This legislation aims to stop the intentional use of vehicles to drive, chase, run over, kill, or take wolves or coyotes on these protected lands.
“Our federal lands are not battlegrounds for reckless and belligerent behavior,” said Representative Nancy Mace. “This bill will preserve the safety and beauty of our natural spaces and ensure wildlife can thrive without the threat of harm from motor vehicles.”
Key provisions of the bill include:
- Prohibition: The bill prohibits intentionally using a motor vehicle to harm or take wild animals on federal lands.
- Enforcement and Investigation: The Secretary of the Interior will lead investigations into violations, with support from federal, state, and local agencies.
- Penalties: Those found in violation could face fines up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
- Exceptions: The bill includes safeguards to protect individuals who act to avoid serious injury or death.
