The City of Charleston has issued a warning about significant tidal flooding expected today from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The National Weather Service office in Charleston has highlighted the potential for major flooding due to Hurricane Milton's high northeast winds, storm surge, and an anticipated tide of 8.1 to 8.3 feet at 1:50 p.m. There is no forecast for rain.
To assist residents in low-lying areas, five city parking garages are offering free parking until Friday at 8:30 a.m. These garages include the Aquarium parking garage on Calhoun Street, the Visitor Center parking garage on Mary Street, the 99 West Edge parking garage near the Charleston Police Department, the Charleston Tech Center parking garage on Morrison Drive, and the East Bay/Prioleau parking garage on Prioleau Street. Residents must press the call button when exiting and inform the operator they are utilizing free storm parking.
In preparation for potential flooding, the Charleston Police Department has placed barricades on streets and intersections prone to flooding during high tides. Residents are advised not to drive around these barricades or through flooded streets as violators will be ticketed.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following local media and checking updates from the City of Charleston's official social media channels and newsletter.
