Charleston police involved in fatal shooting; SLED investigates

Two officers from the Charleston Police Department were involved in a shooting incident today near King Street and Line Street. The event occurred shortly before 10 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a physical altercation between two men, one reportedly armed.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the individuals, and during this encounter, one man presented a firearm. According to updated information from the initial investigation, two officers discharged their service weapons, hitting the armed suspect.

The officers provided immediate medical assistance at the scene before transporting the suspect to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. No injuries were reported among the police officers.

In accordance with standard procedure, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the incident. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased individual at an appropriate time.

Chief Walker is expected to provide further details in a briefing scheduled for tomorrow. Information regarding the time and location of this update will be shared once confirmed.

The Charleston Police Department is cooperating fully with SLED as they proceed with their investigation.
