The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department has announced two concurrent art exhibitions at Park Circle Gallery. The exhibitions will feature the works of Jazmo Hankins from Mount Pleasant, SC, and Lucius Nelson from Darlington, SC. The exhibits will run from December 4 to December 28, 2024, with a public reception scheduled for December 6 from 5:00-7:00pm.
Jazmo Hankins' exhibition titled "The Ether and the Innerspace" presents a collection of drawings and paintings that delve into the origins of ideas and dreams. Hankins describes his work as a "stream of consciousness approach to image making," exploring whether ideas are external transmissions or products of the human mind. He explains, “While inspired by everything I see (both the things I love, and the things I hate), I do not believe in questing for ‘inspiration’.” His artwork is categorized as pop art, outsider art, and folk art.
Lucius Nelson's exhibit, "Don’t It Feel Good?", offers oil paintings that explore late-stage consumer culture and spiritual themes through a Renaissance-inspired lens. Nelson’s work is described as both beautiful and grotesque. He states, “The seedlings of my work were planted in the high fructose toxic goop of Nickelodeon cartoons blended with early exposure to renaissance art.” His background includes photography and video which contribute to capturing unique imagery for his paintings.
Park Circle Gallery is located at 4820 Jenkins Avenue in North Charleston. Admission to the gallery is free, with street parking available nearby.
