The Citadel secured a 10-1 win over UNCG in the second game of their Southern Conference baseball series on April 25, clinching the weekend set at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The victory was highlighted by Andrew Buffkin’s season-long start of six and one-third innings and three-RBI performances from both TJ Anderson and Michael Gibson. The Bulldogs improved to a record of 21-21 overall and 6-8 in conference play, while the Spartans dropped to 15-28 overall and 2-12 in the conference.
Gibson contributed three hits, including a double, with three RBIs, two runs scored, a walk, and three stolen bases. Anderson drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before adding a two-run home run later in the game. “I thought we executed early, something we’ve been talking about and trying to do a better job,” head coach Russell Triplett said. “We’ve been getting a little bit better with runners in scoring position and just taking what they give you. We talked about after game, I didn’t think we went too many at bats in a row without having a good at bat. At times this year, for stretches too long, we go too many hitters in a row without having a quality at bat.” Jayden Williams, Christian Stratis and Lane Tobin also added two hits each for The Citadel.
Buffkin allowed only one earned run on six hits while striking out five over his outing. Ben Brash came out of the bullpen to strike out two consecutive batters with bases loaded late in the seventh inning before Zane Davis finished off the final two frames with two more strikeouts.
For UNCG, Jacob Dilley drove in their lone run on two hits while starting pitcher JT Weaver took his fourth loss after allowing four runs across just two innings pitched.
The teams are scheduled to conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.
