The Citadel baseball team secured a 10–8 win over Winthrop on April 8 at Founders Field, supported by a five-run second inning and an overall tally of 11 hits. The victory brings The Citadel’s record to 16-16, while Winthrop falls to 22-11.
This game marks the Bulldogs’ second consecutive contest with at least 11 hits and their second straight scoring at least ten runs. The team also recorded a season-high six hit-by-pitches, three from Lane Tobin.
Christian Stratis contributed two hits, including a double and three RBIs. Tobin and Zach Hunt each added two hits and a double. Phillips Daniels scored twice with two RBIs, while Sam Dansky hit his first home run of the season and collected four RBIs. Matthew Lively stole three bases.
On the mound, Riley Ballard started for The Citadel, pitching nearly four innings with four earned runs allowed. Liam Foley pitched in relief before CJ Van Slooten delivered one scoreless inning to earn the win (1-1). Andrew Buffkin closed out the game for the save over nearly three innings.
Head coach Russell Triplett said: “A gritty team win. Ballard did an excellent job overcoming numerous defensive mistakes early on with damage control in the first inning. Then we responded with five runs right after that. Foley and Van Slooten excelled in finishing innings.” Triplett continued: “Buffkin was outstanding late in the game. Our offense responded every time it got close and had tough at-bats all day. Great start to the week with two midweek wins against strong teams.”
Looking ahead, The Citadel will travel to Spartanburg for a three-game conference series against Wofford from April 10 through April 12.
