Charleston Southern University’s women’s basketball team was defeated by Winthrop 77-55 on Saturday at Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The game, which marked Senior Day for CSU, saw the Buccaneers keep pace with Winthrop in the first half before the Eagles pulled away after halftime.

Tyonna Bailey led Charleston Southern with 17 points and eight rebounds. Asha Sra contributed nine rebounds and eight assists. Alba Garcia added 11 points for the Buccaneers.

CSU started strong, matching Winthrop early in the game. Bailey scored seven points in the opening quarter, but the team shot just 33.3 percent from the field during that period. By halftime, Winthrop had increased its lead to 33-24 as Charleston Southern struggled offensively.

After halftime, Winthrop continued to build momentum, shooting over 50 percent in both the third and fourth quarters. The Eagles outscored CSU in the paint and held a significant rebounding advantage, finishing with a 44-28 edge on the boards.

Bailey has now led her team in scoring for the fifteenth time this season and has reached double figures in twenty-two games. Caelan Ellis recorded her twenty-fourth double-digit scoring game of the year with ten points. Alba Garcia scored in double digits for a second consecutive game.

Before tipoff, Charleston Southern honored seniors Taylor Caldwell, Alba Garcia, and Saniya Jones.

The Buccaneers will next compete in the Air Force Reserve Big South Championships scheduled for next week in Johnson City, Tennessee.
