Moncks Corner will soon be home to Mega Boat Landing on the southern end of Lake Moultrie, thanks to a project that's been in the works for nearly a decade.

State Sen. Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley), who pushed the project along for the last eight years and came to fruition through a partnership with Berkeley County and Santee Cooper, thanked several people for allowing it to get to this point, including the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and colleagues in the county's legislative delegation.

"My gratitude goes out to the great folks at Santee Cooper, especially President Mark Bonsall and General Counsel Pamela Williams, for finding a way to move the project forward through a partnership with Berkeley County," Grooms wrote in a Facebook post. "A great deal of credit also goes out to Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb who quickly embraced the project and held clear any hurdles. His investment enabled the county to become the project's lead sponsor."

Located at the end of Broughton Road in Moncks Corner at the former Atkins Boat Landing/Lions Beach, Mega Boat Landing is slated to include six new boat launch ramps, an event pavilion and walking trail, and approximately 360 total parking spaces for boat trailers and passenger vehicles, according to a Berkley County press release

In addition, the release said, there will be a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office outpost dock for deputies to respond to lake emergencies.

The site plan for land use was unanimously approved by the Moncks Corner Board of Zoning Appeals earlier this month, according to the release.

The project is expected to be finished by fall 2022, and cost roughly $6.5 million which is being paid for, in-part, by a 75% matching grant from the state, according to the release.
