Even with a 8-2 victory over the Down East Wood Ducks last week at Grainger Stadium, the Charleston RiverDogs came up short in a bid to tie a franchise record for wins in a season.
That's because the Minor League Baseball Low-A East affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, in need of a sweep to do so, went on to lose three of their four final regular season games to the Wood Ducks.
But what RiverDogs lacked in trying to tie records, they've made up in the postseason, facing the same Wood Ducks squad in a best-of-five championship series to decide the season's champion.
In its 8-2 win, however, Charleston was led by Patrick Merino's two-run single for a 4-0 edge, and a Beau Brundage homer to make it 5-0. Matt Dyer immediately followed suit to crack his 11th homer of the season for a 6-0 bulge.
It marked the sixth time that the RiverDogs hit back-to-back home runs this season.
