The City of Charleston is preparing for an anticipated winter weather event set to impact the area starting late Tuesday afternoon. The forecast predicts hazardous cold temperatures, wind chills, snow, and freezing rain. City officials are advising residents to take necessary precautions due to expected dangerous conditions.

Temperatures and wind chills are predicted to drop significantly on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with wind chills potentially reaching as low as 14°F. Such conditions pose risks to humans, pets, plants, and pipes. Rain is expected to transition into a sleet/snow mix by Tuesday evening, continuing into early Wednesday morning with an estimated total precipitation of 1-2 inches of mostly snow. The most significant impacts are anticipated between 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Travel conditions are expected to be hazardous due to potential road refreezing from low temperatures. Residents are advised against unnecessary travel during these times. There is also a possibility of freezing rain on Thursday morning that could prolong hazardous conditions.

In response to the inclement weather forecast, Charleston city offices will close at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21st and remain closed all day Wednesday, January 22nd. Public meetings scheduled for these days will be rescheduled accordingly.

Garbage and trash collection services will continue as usual on Tuesday until road conditions deteriorate but will not occur on Wednesday. Services are expected to resume on Thursday if road conditions permit.

The City of Charleston is collaborating with regional partners such as Charleston County Emergency Management, South Carolina Department of Transportation, and the National Weather Service in monitoring the situation closely. Efforts are being made by city departments to maintain public safety and essential services throughout the storm.

Mayor William Cogswell stated: “We encourage all residents to stay informed and take immediate steps to prepare for the cold and potentially hazardous weather conditions.” He added that efforts are ongoing "to ensure that our community stays safe" during this winter event.

Residents should dress warmly in layers covering exposed skin against frostbite risk; keep pets indoors or provide warm shelter; ensure pipes have proper insulation; avoid travel if possible especially from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning.
