College of Charleston students toured West Columbia-based Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation, which is expanding its Lexington County facility to add another 48,000 square feet and recently announced a $12.5 million investment that will create more than 125 new jobs.

College of Charleston Sciences and Mathematics School Dean Sebastian van Delden posted on social media about the group's time at the Nephron facility on 12th St. Extension, and expressed his gratitude in a Sept. 16 tweet.

"Thank you so much @NephronPharm for hosting me and a group of @CofC @CofCSSM engineering, computing, biology, and chemistry students today!" van Delden tweeted. "So proud to know CEO/Owner Lou Kennedy, one of SC's finest leaders and most innovative thinkers."

Images in van Delden's posted included that of the group, attired in head coverings, in addition to their COVID-safe face coverings, touring a portion of the company's manufacturing area.

College of Charleston, public liberal arts college chartered in 1785 that celebrated its 250th year in 2020, is the state's oldest college.

Nephron, which manufactures sterile inhalation and 503B outsourced medications, is a certified woman-owned business recognized by the National Women Business Owners Corporation with a 650-plus workforce that is 44% female, the majority of whom hold advanced degrees.

"This certification allows us to develop new business opportunities with our existing customer base, which allows us to offer more jobs to capable women," Kennedy said on the company's website.

Women at Nephron also fill key management roles, including quality assurance, chemistry and microbiology, regulatory compliance, corporate treasury, information technology, research and development engineering and Product Development.
