The Cape Construction Notice | October 4

On October 4, 2021, site work and pile driving will begin in preparation for the construction of The Cape on Kiawah. Residents may experience pile driving vibrations and noise during the driving period, which is expected to last six weeks during daytime hours.

The Cape is a 14-acre oceanfront parcel in West Beach, adjacent to Timbers Kiawah that East West Partners is developing. The initial construction schedule consisted of a two-phase, five-year project; however, the developer reduced the schedule to begin both phases simultaneously, with a projected completion during winter 2023-2024.

Mark Clark Extension Project

SCDOT and Charleston County have announced their intent to move the Mark Clark Extension Project forward with the preferred Alternative G. Details on the public involvement process are provided here. Residents are encouraged to participate in this process and submit their comments during the comment period that runs through October 15, 2021.

Berkeley Electric Plans Major Project on Kiawah

This fall, Berkeley Electric Cooperative (BEC) will be working on significant upgrades to the island’s electric infrastructure. These updates, which span most of the island, will replace old infrastructure and add capacity in areas where growth has outpaced the current grid’s reliability.

The most visible site will be from the intersection of Kiawah Island Parkway at Sora Rail to the intersection of Governor’s Dr. at Flyway Drive, where BEC will replace approximately five miles of infrastructure. This line is the spine of the island's power, and upgrades to infrastructure in this area are essential to ensure future reliability. During the project, there will be crews along the roadside until the replacement is complete.

While BEC will attempt to limit outages during this project, there may be times when that cannot be avoided. BEC will communicate planned outages. Residents should ensure their contact information with BEC is correct to ensure advanced notice of an outage in their area. Current Nest Count: 347

The season is slowly coming to an end. The last nest found was on September 13. There is a couple of nests still incubating that are expected to hatch in early October!

  • Never harass, touch or disturb hatchlings or eggs.
  • When you leave the beach, take all items with you and fill in your holes, as these can be significant hurdles for turtles.
  • Lights out for Turtles! May - October, all outdoor lighting facing the beachfront should be turned off from 9 p.m. to dawn. Also, no use of artificial light (flashlights, cell phone lights) on the beach at night. It can cause nesting females to abandon nesting attempts and disorient hatchlings as they make their way to the ocean.
