Two South Carolina inns—Hotel Trundle in Columbia and Wentworth Mansion in Charleston—made USA Today's top 10 list of historic hotels.

"For a great indicator of how our thriving @CityofColumbia has an incredible array of business, cultural, entertainment & historic achievements, please check out @USAToday's listing of @HotelTrundle as #5 in their 10 Best U.S. Historic Hotels article," Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin said in a tweet. 

Hotel Trundle was ranked fifth on the list. It's located at 1224 Taylor Street and combines historic former retail businesses—Rose Talbert Paints, Powell Furniture and Western Auto—into one space, the mayor said.

"Since opening in 2018, more than 28,000 guests have stayed at Hotel Trundle, and 80% of their expenses go directly back to Columbia and surrounding cities by using local  uppliers, vendors, and service providers," Benjamin wrote.

"Three buildings in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, dating back as far as 1914, were brought back to life in 2018 by young husband-and-wife architects and combined to create the Hotel Trundle," USA Today reported. "With 41 eccentric guestrooms, this boutique gem hints at its past with exposed brick, trusses, and original windows mixed with luxurious amenities, locally sourced art, and attention to customer service. Every city deserves a treat like this one."

Wentworth Mansion claimed the ninth-place spot. 

"Located in charming Downtown Charleston, Wentworth Mansion offers 21 luxe rooms in one of the city's grandest estates," the USA Today story continued. "The hotel, built in 1886, had its start as the private mansion of a wealthy cotton merchant. Touches include Italian crystal chandeliers, marble fireplaces, gas fireplaces, day beds, over-sized whirlpool tubs and walk-in showers."

Other inns on the list included: the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem, PA; the Peabody Memphis in Memphis; Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa in Point Clear, AL; Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest, IL; Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, MI; the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville; the Francis House in Calistoga, CA; and the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.
