The College of Charleston launched its electrical engineering major for the fall 2021 semester, according to a recent report by The College Today.
The new major, guided by the School of Sciences and Mathematics Advisory Board, comes following an increasing industry demand for electrical engineering.
“We set up the program to support companies in the region, including Bosch, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volvo, Boeing and Cummins,” School of Sciences and Mathematics Dean Sebastian van Delden told The College Today. “Our electrical engineering program focuses on autonomous electric vehicles — a market projected to grow from $50 to $500 billion dollars in this decade.”
According to the report, College of Charleston engineers will learn the ability to handle complex technical issues with excellent communication and leadership skills.
Upon graduation, the college’s electrical engineering graduates will possess technical knowledge alongside a strong foundation in liberal arts, the report states.
The program will be joined by electrical engineering instructor Kebin Xu, who first came to the College as a visiting instructor of computer science in 2018. According to The College Today, Xu will be able to share her passions for electrical engineering and computer science with students through her instruction in the program.
