Stephen Bowden wins District 10 seat on Charleston City Council | Bowden for Charleston
Stephen Bowden has won the District 10 seat on the Charleston City Council, defeating incumbent Harry Griffin ahead of what would have been his second term.
Bowden tweeted Tuesday sharing, his gratitude to voters in the district as Griffin claimed defeat shortly after polls closed Tuesday night.
“Thank you, District 10! I am proud to represent you," Bowden wrote in his tweet.
WCBD-TV reported that unofficial results by Bowden’s campaign showed Bowden with 934 votes and Griffin with 577. Griffin had been elected to office in 2017, and served one full term before being defeated by Bowden.
As he prepares to take office, WCBD reported that flooding mitigation and traffic decongestion in West Ashley are among Bowden’s top priorities.
Bowden has also previously voiced plans to vote against “disastrous” projects threatening natural flood protections in the city and to work to extend the Glenn McConnell Parkway, the report stated.
A newcomer to politics, Bowden graduated from Old Dominion University in Virginia, and obtained a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, WCBD said.
He currently works as a local attorney with the Charleston County Public Defender’s Office and lives in Shadowmoss with his wife, a teacher in the Charleston School District, it said.
