Turbeville's Talaysia Cooper recently announced her intention to play basketball for head coach Dawn Staley at the University of South Carolina.

Cooper signed a National Letter of Intent recently to play for the Gamecocks, beginning with the 2022-23 season.

Cooper, a 6-foot point guard, ranks fourth among high school seniors in the county at her position, and No. 18 overall in the nation.

"Keeping Talaysia here in South Carolina was a priority,” Staley said in a gamecocksonline.com release announcing Cooper's signing this week. “She's in line with all the great South Carolina players that we have had the privilege of coaching. She is a big guard that plays both sides of the ball.”

Cooper is a two-time South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year. She is also the 2021 Gatorade South Carolina Player of the Year after averaging 23.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 8 assists a game as a junior.

She should have a dynamic senior year at East Clarendon High School before heading to college.

“Her versatility allows us to not only move her around, but the other guards on the floor as well,” Staley said in the release. “Her upside is endless, and we think our fans are going to love her game and her energy."

The Gamecocks don’t need her this season - they are ranked No.1 in the nation after returning 11 players from last year’s Final Four team.
