Patrick McCrory will take the helm of Palmetto Railways, effective Tuesday, Jan. 4, succeeding Jeffrey McWhorter as president and CEO of the company, which is an enterprise agency of the state and a division of the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

According to Palmetto Railways' website, McWhorter had announced his retirement recently, wrapping up a career spanning nearly four decades with the Class III short line railroad, which offers service to some of the state’s largest companies, handling more than 100,000 carloads each year. McCrory said he is grateful for the opportunity after having had the chance to work with McWhorter for nearly a decade.

“During my time here, Palmetto Railways’ and South Carolina’s freight rail infrastructure and volumes have continued to grow, with an increasing emphasis on the importance of safety, economic development and efficient and reliable rail service,” McCrory said, according to the website.

McCrory brought a wealth of experience with him when he joined Palmetto Railways in 2013. He had served in several leadership positions with CSX Intermodal Terminals and APM Terminals. He holds a bachelor’s degree in logistics and intermodal transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a master’s degree in transportation management from the University of Denver.

McCrory, a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving as a strategic sealift officer, is also a member of several trade associations, including the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association, the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, the Intermodal Association of North America and the Maritime Association of South Carolina.

McWhorter started his career as a part-time switchman on the extra board and worked his way up the ladder until he took the helm of Palmetto Railways in 2007. He remained with the company for 37 years and helped ensure Palmetto Railways' place in South Carolina's economy for years to come.
