Leadership Charleston's 50th class had an enlightening visit to the State House, where they gained new knowledge, perspectives, and connections. The day began with a warm welcome from several representatives and senators who emphasized the importance of constituents becoming involved in the legislative process. Chamber members then provided insights into the lobbying process, highlighting the role of both lobbyists and constituents.

One participant, LaShea DuBois, shared her experience of humanizing lobbyists and gaining a better understanding of their work. She mentioned, "Being able to humanize them and see them as people" was a valuable perspective shift for her.

Governor McMaster greeted the group at the State House, where they observed legislative activities and were recognized by local representatives. Brandon Paul noted the collaborative nature of legislators, even when on opposite sides of an issue.

During a lunchtime panel, Amanda Loveday and Katon Dawson stressed the importance of inclusivity in politics, encouraging individuals to be part of the solution rather than the division. Amanda highlighted, "You don’t have to be part of the division, you can be part of the inclusion," while Katon urged attendees to vote and consider running for office.

The group then engaged in a discussion with Justice John Few at the South Carolina Supreme Court chambers. Justice Few emphasized the need for leaders to stay connected to their communities and strive for inclusivity. He advised cultivating relationships with local representatives to advocate for important causes.

Participants like Jennifer Johnson and Maryn Goolsby Favors found the discussions with Justice Few empowering and informative. Maryn expressed her renewed motivation to make a positive impact with her platform after hearing from Justice Few.

The day concluded with reflections on the deepening connections within the Leadership Charleston program. Bryan Adams shared his positive experience of building connections and friendships with fellow leaders in the region, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to improve the community.

Overall, the State House visit provided valuable insights and inspiration for the 50th class of Leadership Charleston, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among the participants.
