The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, a multifaceted nonprofit membership organization, has initiated a national search for a new President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The current CEO, Bryan Derreberry, who has held the position since 2011, announced his plan to retire once his successor is appointed.
Founded in 1773, the Chamber serves the tri-county region of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester. It boasts over 1,600 member organizations and an operating budget of $8.3 million. Member organizations range from small businesses to large corporations and include nonprofit agencies as well as colleges and universities.
The Chamber’s mission is to advocate for and empower the Charleston region to advance a prosperous business environment. It provides various programs and services for its members, including public policy advocacy, networking events, leadership programs, regional advancement activities, workforce development initiatives, minority business development efforts, and military affairs activities.
In April 2024, the Chamber launched "People First," a strategic regional initiative aimed at shaping the legacy of the region by 2040. The initiative focuses on four pillars: attainable housing; future-ready education; a multi-faceted regional transit system; and affordable high-quality childcare. The strategy’s funding goal of $8.5 million is supported by both public and private sector partners.
The Charleston Chamber Foundation was established in 2016 as a 501(c)3 affiliate. It received an $8.4 million EDA grant initially focusing on healthcare workforce issues. Additionally, the Chamber operates a Political Action Committee that endorses candidates and supports significant regional issues.
The incoming CEO will report to the Chair of the 65-member Board of Directors which includes a 19-member Executive Committee and 11 Board Liaisons from local government jurisdictions and military leadership. The CEO will lead a staff of 25 members with direct supervision over several Senior Vice Presidents overseeing finance & operations; government relations; marketing & events; membership; programs & initiatives; and strategic partnerships.
The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of success in similar roles within chambers of commerce or economic development organizations or as senior executives in complex private or public sector entities or nonprofits.
