The City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department has announced an upcoming exhibition by Shayn Green, the current Artist-in-Residence. Her mixed media works will be displayed at the Park Circle Community Building from October 25 to November 1, 2024. A public reception is scheduled for October 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, with free admission.

Shayn Green was chosen as the city's first Artist-in-Residence for its Pilot Residency Program running from August to October 2024. During her residency, she served as a visual art ambassador and conducted two free classes in collaboration with the Cultural Arts Department. These classes included a mixed media wall hanging class in September and a zine-making class in October.

Her exhibition titled "Big Nose Baddies" features mixed media pieces inspired by her experiences as a black and queer woman and her Geechee family’s culture. Using techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and sewing, Green creates pieces that promote diversity and highlight black beauty.

Green graduated from Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston and earned a BA in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina in 2019. She specializes in portraiture, literary illustrations, and graphic design. Her "Big Nose Baddies" series aims to connect with other black and brown people through fun and colorful artwork. “Growing up I did not see a lot of artwork showcasing black and brown people with features like mine,” Green explains.

Further details about the Artist-in-Residence program can be found on the City's website. Applications for quarterly visual artist residencies for 2025 open on October 17, 2024.
