The City of Charleston has commenced the final phase of construction for the Huger Street and King Street Pump Station. This development is anticipated to enhance water flow from the intersection by 70,000 gallons per minute, aiming to mitigate frequent flooding in the area.

Several community leaders attended the groundbreaking event, including former District 3 Councilmember James Lewis Jr., who was instrumental in initiating this project during his tenure on the Charleston City Council. His presence marked a significant milestone as the project progresses toward completion.

Remarks were delivered by Mayor Cogswell, Councilmember Robert Mitchell, Director of Stormwater Management Matt Fountain, and CEO of Charleston Housing Authority Art Milligan. They emphasized the pump station's critical role in flood prevention and its value to the local community.

The City expressed gratitude towards partners such as Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson Engineering, SJ Hamill Construction, The Charleston Housing Authority, and the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority for their efforts over several years.

The construction of this final phase is expected to take approximately 18 months.
