The North Charleston Police Department has recognized three of its officers for their swift response in aiding a man experiencing a medical crisis. Sgt. Danielle Sherwood, Pfc. Andrew Johnson, and Pfc. Chris T. Cooper were awarded Certificates of Recognition for their actions in October 2024.

On October 22, the department received an urgent call from a California resident concerned about his adult son living in North Charleston. The father reported that he had not been able to reach his son for over a week and was worried due to the son's severe alcoholism and depression.

The father mentioned that during their last conversation, his son had expressed feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. An attempt by the son's ex-girlfriend to check on him at his residence went unanswered.

Sgt. Sherwood, despite being engaged with another call, coordinated with Pfc. Johnson and Pfc. Cooper to perform a welfare check at the man's home, recognizing the potential severity of the situation given the father's age and concerns.

Upon entering the residence using a key provided to them, they found the man suffering from what appeared to be a medical episode linked to his addiction issues. He had been immobile on the floor for several days.

The officers immediately contacted emergency medical services (EMS) to provide necessary assistance.

"Great job by the officers for their quick response and commitment to helping the father!" praised an official statement from the department.
