The City of Charleston has taken a significant step in its efforts to revitalize West Ashley by demolishing the long-abandoned Ryan’s Steakhouse on St. Andrews Blvd. This initiative is part of a public-private partnership with Gramling Brothers, LLC, a local developer.

This project is an integral part of Charleston's broader strategy to rejuvenate West Ashley and enhance community safety and vibrancy. The city hopes this demolition will lead to new amenities in the area, similar to the successful redevelopment efforts on Sumar Street.

Mayor William Cogswell expressed optimism about the project's impact, stating, “This is an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to revitalize West Ashley. West Ashley residents can look forward to a brighter future with more opportunities and safer neighborhoods as we continue our investment in this part of Charleston.”

The abandoned restaurant had become a site for criminal activities such as trespassing, drug use, and assault. By collaborating with Gramling Brothers, the city aims to eliminate these issues and improve safety.

William Tinkler, District 9 City Councilmember, highlighted the importance of this development: “The demolition of the Ryan’s Steakhouse property is a significant victory for West Ashley. Working together with Gramling Brothers, we are removing eyesores and creating new opportunities for our community to thrive. This is just the beginning, and we are excited for what comes next.”

Demolition commenced on Monday, February 24. Both the city and Gramling Brothers are focused on transforming the site into a beneficial space for the local community that will also attract new investments.
