STJFD Receives Assistance to Firefighters Grant 

St. Johns Fire District has received and accepted an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) totaling $650K that will cover training for current personnel to attend and achieve the level of Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. Paramedics provide advanced lifesaving skills and pharmacological interventions to patients beyond that which is allowed by an EMT-Basic. The grant will cover training, equipment, and costs associated with the Paramedic program. Approximately 80% of St. John’s emergency personnel are certified to the level of EMT-Basic.

PD Request for a Medical Health & Wellness Village

Charleston County has noticed that on Monday, November 8, 2021, at 2 p.m. Charleston County Planning Commission will hold a workshop to discuss a Planned Development request for a Medical Health & Wellness Village on Betsy Kerrison Parkway adjacent to the Pam Harrington offices. Members of the public may submit written public comments via email to CCPC@charlestoncounty.org or by mail to the Zoning & Planning Department, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405. Written public comments received by noon on Friday, November 5, will be distributed to the Planning Commission members. The workshop will be live-streamed on the Charleston County website. November 1 – March 15 – Pets are allowed to be off-leash from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. everywhere on the beach except in the critical habitat area. Pets must be leashed from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Owners must remain with their pet, have the pet under control, and have a leash in their possession to leash their pet if requested by other beach patrons or by Beach Patrol. Violators could be ticketed. Electronic leashes are prohibited. More at www.kiawahisland.org/beaches.

The next King Tide that could affect the island will occur November 4-8. King Tides are the highest seasonal tides that naturally occur each year. In some cases, they may barely even be noticed. In other cases, a King Tide may cause flooding of low-lying areas and disruption to daily routines. More

Charleston County Annual Tax Bills

The Charleston County Auditor's Office began mailing annual property tax bills the first week of October 2021. Bills are due to the Treasurer's Office by January 18, 2022. If you do not receive your property bills by October 31, please contact the Auditor's Office to verify your mailing address. More 
NOTE: The Town does not impose a property tax on its residents. Property taxes are paid to Charleston County.

The Cape - Pile Driving Update

On October 4, site work and pile driving began for constructing The Cape on Kiawah. Residents may experience pile driving vibrations and noise during daytime hours for several more weeks with completion before Thanksgiving. 

Kiawah Goes Greener Initiative

The Town recently announced the Kiawah Goes Greener initiative, which unites and formalizes an interagency commitment by Kiawah's major entities to continued environmental stewardship and advancement of eco-friendly business practices. The goal is to create a multi-year plan to reduce the island's carbon footprint and adopt other eco-friendly initiatives into daily operations More

TOKI Staff Spotlight

Town Biologist Aaron Given was recently interviewed by Charleston Mercury Magazine on demystifying fall migration
on Kiawah Island. The Kiawah Island Banding Station (managed by Given) is one of the southeast's largest bird banding stations focusing on fall migration, wintering Marsh Sparrows, Painted Buntings, and Wilsons Plovers. Read the article here.

Kiawah Island Marathon Notice 

The 43rd annual Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021. This year's race will have exciting changes, including a new course and venue at the West Beach Conference Center. The Resort will release additional details as race day approaches. Residents should prepare in advance for the following road closures and delays on race day. 

Road Closures on Dec. 11
  • Kiawah Island Pkwy | 8 – 9 a.m.
  • Governors Dr. (Vanderhorst Gate to 1st Flyway Dr.) | 8:15 – 9:15 a.m.
  • Governors Dr. (1st Flyway to Ocean Course Dr.) | 8:30 – 9:45 a.m.
