The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is currently soliciting public opinion on the Interstate 526 project near Virginia Avenue (exit 20) to near Paul Cantrell Boulevard (exit 11).
According to a SCDOT press release, the public will have the opportunity to comment on the action to amend the 2021-27 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to include the project’s preliminary engineering, right of way and other phases of work through Nov. 11, 2021.
The project proposes improvements to the I-26/I-526 Interchange, including I-526 mainline widening from four to eight lanes from Paul Cantrell Boulevard to Virginia Avenue, interchange modifications at North Rhett/Virginia Interchange, and minor modifications at all other service interchanges in order to accommodate the interstate widening.
A summary of substantive comments will be available to the Commission.
Pending consideration of public comments, the approval of the phases of work will be recommended for inclusion in a future version of the STIP.
The estimated cost for the project is approximately $190 million.
Members of the public can submit their comments to Mrs. Christina Lewis, Statewide Planning Chief, SCDOT Office of Planning, 955 Park Street, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, S.C. 29202.
Comments can also be submitted by email to lewisc@scdot.org.
