Romario Piggott and the Charleston Battery have come to terms for the midfielder to play another season, pending league and federation approval, the team announced Jan. 10.

“It feels good to re-sign with the Battery, I’m really excited to be back in Charleston and to meet the new coach and the new players that come this year,” Piggott said in a team release. “I will keep pushing myself leading up to the new season and I look forward to the new dynamic of the team.”

It is a welcome addition for Coach Conor Casey.

“We’re really happy that Romario is returning to the club, I’ve seen a lot of great things from him over the past few years,” Casey said in the release. “He’s played mostly on the wings where he can utilize his speed, and he can play as more of an attacking midfielder too. He’s got some ability to be versatile for us.”

Piggott spent the early part of the 2021 season out with an injury he had sustained the previous season, but he made his presence felt soon after he returned to play in July. He scored four goals, assisted on two others and had 18 chances created in 18 appearances, according to team stats.

In an Oct. 20 game against the L.A. Galaxy II, he quickly helped his team retake the lead just minutes after the Galaxy had knotted the score at 1-1. Charleston eventually won 3-1.

Casey is hoping Piggott supplies an emotional lift for the team.

“I’ve heard great things about his personality and his positive energy, and that’s what we want in the building, those leaders that come in every day upbeat and ready to work,” the new coach said in the team's release.

Piggott signed with Charleston in September 2018 and made his first appearance in 2019. Through his first three seasons with the Black and Yellow, Piggott has become a consistent performer on the pitch, registering nine goals and seven assists, team records indicate.

He hails from Panama City, Panama, and played professionally for four seasons in the Panamanian Football League (LPF).
