The City of Charleston is hosting its third annual Open Data Day to demonstrate how public data informs decision-making and to educate residents on using city tools and data for their own projects. The virtual event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 28.
The event will feature tutorials on accessing city data, showcase projects addressing key city priorities, and share frequently requested data from residents. Various speakers from across the city will provide tips and best practices for data collection and use.
In January 2021, Charleston City Council adopted an open data policy to reinforce its commitment to an open and transparent government. Since then, the city's Open Data Management team has been updating a city data inventory annually and publishing datasets on the city's open data portal. While not all datasets are published, the team is actively working to release all datasets that do not contain sensitive or protected information.
