The Chamber has highlighted the potential benefits of the Transportation Sales Tax (TST) Referendum for over 28,000 residents of Johns Island and more than 11,650 residents of James Island. The referendum aims to improve road safety and infrastructure by securing funding for essential projects without increasing taxes.

The TST Referendum proposes to enhance roads, reduce traffic congestion, improve public transit, and protect greenspaces across Charleston County. If approved, it will fund critical infrastructure improvements such as those on I-526. A study by SCDOT indicates that Charleston region residents currently waste an average of 50 hours annually in traffic. The referendum seeks to address this issue.

Without the passage of the referendum, there is no alternative funding source for these necessary projects. This could lead to worsening gridlock and prolonged commutes while jeopardizing initiatives like the Greenbelt Program aimed at preserving natural areas.

Residents are encouraged to vote "Yes" on Questions 1 and 2 in the upcoming election on November 5. Question 1 pertains to securing funds for these projects, while Question 2 facilitates their prompt commencement. Both questions appear under the Local Questions section on ballots.

Voting "Yes" is seen as a step towards creating safer roads, reducing traffic congestion, and safeguarding natural spaces in Charleston County.
