Residents of Mount Pleasant and Charleston County are being urged to vote in favor of the Transportation Sales Tax (TST) Referendum this election season. The referendum, which will be on the ballot on November 5, offers a chance to improve infrastructure without raising taxes. If approved, it will fund projects aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and preserving green spaces.

The referendum proposes several key improvements for Mount Pleasant. These include increasing capacity along Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and implementing flood mitigation measures on Long Point Road. Such initiatives aim to address dangerous driving conditions caused by high tides and heavy rain. Additionally, the realignment of Darrell Creek Trail is planned to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Beyond local benefits, the TST Referendum supports county-wide projects like extending the Mark Clark Expressway to alleviate congestion. This could result in reduced travel times and improved emergency response across Charleston County.

Supporters emphasize that there is no alternative plan if funding through this referendum is not secured. Failure to pass it could lead to continued road congestion and potential overdevelopment of green spaces.

Voters are encouraged to approve both Question 1 and Question 2 on the ballot. These questions pertain to securing necessary funding and allowing immediate commencement of work on these projects.
