This Veterans Day, the Charleston community honors its veterans for their significant contributions to the region. With over 75,000 veterans residing in Charleston, along with active-duty personnel and military retirees, their presence is a vital part of the area's identity.

Veterans play crucial roles in various sectors such as business, education, healthcare, and community advocacy. Their involvement continues beyond military service as they contribute to local industry and enrich Charleston's unique character.

The economic impact of the military community is substantial. Statewide, it generates an annual economic impact of $34.3 billion, with $12.7 billion attributed to the Charleston region alone. Military presence directly or indirectly supports one in every nine jobs across South Carolina.

Charleston's strategic military installations have been essential since 1670. Joint Base Charleston contributes $10.9 billion statewide annually, benefiting the local economy significantly. The Naval Information Warfare Center plays a critical role in national cyber defenses, while other facilities like Coast Guard Sector Charleston and the Army Corps of Engineers also contribute economically.

South Carolina ranks among the top states for military density, and Charleston exemplifies support for its military community through strong business ties with veterans and defense-related civilians.

On this day of recognition, "the Chamber proudly honors our veterans" for their dedication and resilience that enhance life in Charleston. Their service continues to shape a thriving and supportive regional community.
