On December 14, 2024, officers responded to an assault near King Street and Hutson Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. According to reports, the suspect struck the victims with an unknown object following an argument. The victims received medical treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Charleston Police Department conducted an investigation and identified Joseph Michael Whitehurst, aged 32 from Raleigh, NC, as the primary suspect. He faces charges of two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a knife during the commission of a violent crime. Whitehurst was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in North Carolina and is awaiting extradition.
