City officials in Charleston are coordinating with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and other regional partners to address road safety amid ongoing freezing temperatures. Efforts are underway to ensure safe travel conditions as soon as possible.
Garbage collection schedules have been adjusted due to the weather. Tuesday routes are canceled and rescheduled for January 28, while Wednesday routes will run on January 24, and Thursday routes on January 25. Residents with extra garbage should place it next to their cans for collection. In Outer West Ashley and Johns Island, Trident Waste collection has suspended yard waste pick-up for the week, with adjusted garbage collection dates set for Friday and Saturday.
The James Island Connector remains closed in both directions while SCDOT works to clear snow and ice. Residents can monitor bridge closures through an online link provided by city officials.
Several warming centers, including Holy City Missions at Aldersgate Methodist, Hibben UMC, and Seacoast Summerville, are currently at capacity but remain open through Friday night. The Leeds Avenue Shelter is closed; however, arrangements have been made to transport guests to preferred destinations. The Community Resource Center offers daytime services from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing shelter during the day along with a food pantry.
Twelve plows dispatched by SCDOT are operating continuously in Charleston County since their arrival. Meanwhile, CARTA operations are suspended for January 23, with no routes running today.
City offices are also closed on January 23 due to hazardous conditions. Officials urge residents to avoid road travel for their own safety and that of first responders. Barricades have been set up across the city to facilitate snow removal efforts.
For non-emergency issues or service inquiries, residents can contact the Citizen Services Desk at (843) 724-7311. Updates will continue as needed, with a strong recommendation for residents to follow all road closures and minimize travel until conditions improve.
