South Carolina Ports President and CEO Jim Newsome will retire from his role June 30, 2022, as COO Barbara Melvin steps into the role.
U.S. Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) tweeted Tuesday, sharing a link to a Post and Courier article about the change in leadership.
"I want to thank @jnewsome3 for his steadfast leadership and congratulate him on this well-deserved retirement,” Clyburn wrote in his tweet. “I am confident that incoming CEO @BarbaraLMelvin will continue to build on the progress that has been made and take SC Ports to new heights."
In an Oct. 18 release, SC Ports said Newsome will serve as an executive advisor to the port after his retirement, following 13 years in his role as president and CEO.
Melvin will take over the role July 1, becoming just the sixth leader in the port’s history as well as the first woman to lead a top 10 U.S. operating container port.
SC Ports Board of Directors unanimously approved the leadership change during its October board meeting, according to the release. Throughout his time as CEO, Newsome made a significant and lasting impact on both the state’s economy and supply chain, the release states.
