The Charleston Police Department has made an arrest for the shooting that shut down the Citadel Mall on August 9, 2024.
A few minutes after 4:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to a large fight in the Citadel Mall near the food court. During the altercation, a single shot was fired from a handgun, causing minor, non-life-threatening injuries to a teenager involved in the disturbance. The teen was transported to a local hospital.
Officers arrived within minutes and quickly located and detained a suspect. Nathan Mungin (19, of Adams Run) is charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and three counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Detectives determined that the shooting was related to an ongoing conflict between several individuals and there are no active threats to the public.
Chief Chito Walker said, “I’m thankful that no one was seriously injured, and am grateful for our officers’ quick response in this situation. However, we must recognize the terrifying reality that was created by these senseless and inexcusable actions. Gun violence is never the answer to any dispute and is not and will never be acceptable.”
The Citadel Mall will resume normal business hours tomorrow, Saturday, August 10, 2024.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any additional information may contact the Charleston Police Department at 843-720-2422 and request to speak with the on-duty Central Detective or email speaktocpd@charleston-sc.gov.
