Congresswoman Nancy Mace has expressed concerns over the federal government's financial practices, calling for significant changes. She criticized what she described as a "bipartisan addiction to reckless spending," which she believes has placed the nation in a precarious financial situation.
Mace commented on a recent 1,547-page continuing resolution (CR), stating, "The bipartisan addiction to reckless spending has put our nation in an extremely precarious financial position. The 1,547 page 'CR' would have just made it worse." She suggested that if Congress cannot agree on a bill that reduces such spending, a partial government shutdown might be necessary to compel Washington to address its budget seriously.
She emphasized that this proposed shutdown would be temporary, noting, "We’re also talking about a very short period of time, 30 days."
According to Mace, the federal government requires a fundamental reassessment: "The Federal government needs a hard reset to help determine what is essential and what we can live without." She anticipates that with President Trump's upcoming term beginning January 20th, there will be an opportunity to pass spending bills reflecting more responsible fiscal policies endorsed by voters in November.
Mace also highlighted the importance of disaster relief for communities affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. She advocates for this relief as an independent measure: "It is critical to get disaster relief to communities that have been devastated by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We should do this in the most appropriate way as a stand alone measure." She supports passing such packages responsibly with offsets before adjourning the current Congress session.
