The City of North Charleston and its emergency management personnel are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Debby. Preparedness efforts are being coordinated with the Charleston and Dorchester County Emergency Management Departments, along with regional agency partners.

All City of North Charleston offices will operate on a normal schedule on Monday, August 5.

For accurate and up-to-date information, please contact the North Charleston Citizen Information Line at 843-740-5883 or 843-740-5887 (Spanish language assistance is available).

North Charleston Sanitation services will operate as scheduled on Monday, August 5, with the remainder of the week’s schedule dependent on Charleston County Landfill’s operations.

Sandbags for North Charleston residents can be obtained starting Monday, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at North Charleston Athletic Center, 5794 Casper Padgett Way, North Charleston, SC 29406. Proof of North Charleston residency must be provided. No businesses. This is a drive-through operation. Residents will pull up to one of the listed distribution sites, and city staff will load up to six filled sandbags into the vehicle until supplies are exhausted.

The designated shelter for residents and pets will open on Monday, August 5 at 8 a.m. at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Administration Building at 3841 Leeds Avenue. If you plan to relocate to the shelter, please bring bedding, clothing, medications, and an emergency kit. Pets are allowed but residents must stay with their animals and cannot drop them off. Remember to bring comfort items with you to the shelter. Individuals can access the shelter via normal CARTA routes.

The North Charleston Public Works department is actively clearing and servicing low-lying areas of the city. Residents are encouraged to report any potential stormwater issues by texting 833-532-0077.

"We urge all residents to stay tuned to official sources for accurate and timely information as Tropical Storm Debby approaches," said a city spokesperson. "The safety and well-being of our community members remain our top priority."

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
