Crime rates drop in North Charleston; NCPD reports decreases in various categories

The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) has reported a significant reduction in crime rates for the year 2024. According to the department, there has been a 14% decrease in violent crime through September. Homicides have notably decreased by 38%, equating to eight fewer incidents compared to the previous year.

Aggravated assaults have also seen a decline of 15%, with those involving firearms down by 13%, or 32 fewer cases. The number of shooting victims has reduced by 16%. Rape cases have dropped by 19% from last year's figures. Robberies are down by 5%, although business robberies have increased by 42%, which translates to five more incidents. Meanwhile, the number of individuals robbed has decreased by 9%.

In terms of non-violent crime, there is a reported decrease of 15% compared to last year. Burglaries are down by an equal percentage, and business burglaries have decreased significantly by 45%, or 64 fewer cases. Stolen vehicle reports are down by 14%. However, DUI arrests have risen sharply by 77%, amounting to an increase of 40 arrests.

The NCPD emphasized their commitment to proactive measures aimed at ensuring the safety of both citizens and visitors.
